As we begin our summer season here at the museum, thanks are due to the members who have helped with the spring cleaning. We now have new curtains in the basement, new drapes in the east room and new carpet at the entry. There are flowers planted by the door, and many thanks are due to Sandy for a well mowed lawn. We also appreciate those who keep our events posted on the sign board. |
We invite guests on our first and third Sunday of the summer months. We were very pleased to have over 100 guests sign our register during Leaf River Daze week-end. The bake sale and the garage sale were very well attended. There was lots of fun at the horseshoe competition on Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. |
With the Veterans Flag Memorial that is planned on the grounds, we may find more visitors coming inside the museum also. We would like to be open more days, but we will need more help to do so. Give us a suggestions, come as a guest or come as a helper and enjoy the artifacts and "memories" at the Leaf River Historical Museum. |

Family photos are the possessions we treasure most. They capture a memory to enjoy again and again. They may be of a place we visited, a favorite friend we knew or family members. Some will show happy times shared with loved ones-- birthday, weddings, and the homes we lived in. A car in the photo will sometimes date the year of the family vacation. Saved photos capture moments in time, and preserve them for years to come. |
We have a nice display of cameras in our showcase at the museum. We have numerous photos and articles that were captured by vintage cameras. |
Friends and members have supplied us with recognizable images of the early Leaf River area and early persons living here. It is exciting to still receieve more of these images at the museum today. We ar happy to display them for your enjoyment when you visit the museum. |
The cameras used for many of the vintage photos may have been taken with a cheap box camera by someone with no special photographic skill. As a new advanced technology became available, new cameras of all sizes and brands captured our "memories" through the years. Perhaps you will see one that you have used in our display.

Members of the Jerry Wickam Post 1148 and the American Legion Auxiliary, as well as the Leaf River Lions Club, met at the Cliff Hartje Pavillion, in the newly named Point-of-Interest in Leaf River called "Veterans Memorial Park" to honor "Old Glory" by properly disposing of tattered flags. The weather was perfect for this event; we all enjoyed the picnic and camaraderie. The same day, members placed flags (approximately 200) all along Third St. (Illinois Route 72). * |
We are now accepting your donations, which are tax deductible, of small, good quality items, i.e. books, antiques, collectables, tools, and household accessories. Receipts are available upon request. |
We have information on a few families that might help your search. We also have many old Birth Certificates dating from 1880-1950. Mostly, Dr. Hugh Bowerman's deliveries. These certificates are posted in alphabetical order in notebooks; which makes it easy to search. You might find the Mother's maiden name, ages, dates of someone you could be searching for. We have a smaller amount of Death Certificates from this same time era. Here you could find the cause of death. So come in and browse around; you might find the information you have been looking for. *

A large crowd was in attendance at the Leaf River High School's 35th annual Alumni night, on March 7, 2009. The classes of 1959 and 1984 were honored guests. |
Activities began witha volleyball game at 5 o'clock. Food was available in the cafeteria for all in attendance. Some local organizations had items displayed for viewing and raffle items to win. |
The Alumni Band, directed by Sid Anderson, entertained the crowd to begin the program. A spirited singing of the Leaf River Loyalty song by all, brought back memories for the many classes represented. Presentation of the colors by the Jerry Wickam Post 1148 was followed by the singing of the National Anthem. |
The honored guests were introduced and called forward to receive a flower and gift. A special tribute to Ardis Kump-- a member of the class of 1959 class. Was given a standing ovation for her services in organizing this event for many years. She was presented with flowers and a decorated cake. Many thanks are due her and her committee for a very special evening. |
The Leaf River Museum has numerous school memorabilia items. There are memory programs of classes that have celebrated 25 and 50 years reunions, as well as complete annuals. Music, sports, FFA trophies and also photos of classes and school events have "overflowed" the School Room. More can be viewed in the basement area. Goblets and programs of school proms fill the show case. We invite guests to visit these school items as well as the numerous other donated and on-loan items of Leaf River area you will find at our museum. *
